Achel Sf "Granne, Abfall (von Flachs und Hanf)" per. Wortschatz arch. (15. Jh.) Stammwort. In seiner späten Bezeugung als niederdeutsche Aussprache von agel gleicher Bedeutung erklärbar. Allerdings ist ahd. einmal eine Variante ahil zu ahir (Ähre) bezeugt, so daß eine alte, nicht literarisch gewordene Form nicht auszuschließen ist. Vorauszusetzen ist auf jeden Fall wg. * agilō(n)- f. "Granne" in ae. egl(e), ndd. agel, egel, wozu die althochdeutsche Form (wenn sie echt ist) eine Form ohne grammatischen Wechsel und evtl. der Suffixform -ula- wäre. Dieses ist eine l-Ableitung zu ig. * aḱ- "spitzig", wie etwa auch l. aculeus "Stachel", bulg. osíl "Granne" (akslav. osla "Schleifstein"), ohne daß eine gemeinsame Vorform vorausliegen muß.
